The First 24 Hours at Home with Your Puppy🐾

Many congratulations! Bringing your puppy home for the first time is a moment you’ll always remember and treasure forever — exciting, emotional and sometimes a little overwhelming.

For your puppy those first 24 hours are just as big. They’ve left the familiar behind and are learning how to feel safe in a completely new world.

This guide walks you through what to expect and how to support your puppy during their very first day and night at home.

First Moments in their new Home

When you arrive home, stay calm and resist the urge to introduce everything at once. A slow introduction helps prevent them feeling overwhelmed and builds confidence from
the very start.

  • Take your puppy to their toilet area first
  • Allow them to explore one room at a time
  • Keep other pets and visitors away initially

Creating a Safe, Calm Space

Your puppy should have a dedicated area where they can relax and retreat.

Include:

  • A comfortable bed placed in a quiet but not isolated spot
  • Fresh water nearby
  • A soft toy or blanket

This becomes their safe place  — somewhere they can decompress when everything feels new.

Feeding on Day One

Stick closely to what your puppy is used to, to start with.

  • Feed the same food they had with their breeder
  • Keep meal times calm and predictable
  • Don’t worry if your puppy eats less than expected

Changes in appetite are common on the first day. Consistency is far more important than
quantity. If you have any concerns talk to your breeder, shelter or vet.

Toilet Breaks and Accidents

Accidents will happen — and that’s okay.

  • Take your puppy out frequently, especially after eating, playing and sleeping
  • Praise calmly when they toilet in the right place
  • Avoid punishment — it can cause anxiety and confusion

The goal today isn’t training perfection, just gentle routine-building.

The First Night

The first night is often the hardest part — for both of you.

Tips to help:

  • Get them used to their bed area in plenty of time before the first night
  • Expect some crying or restlessness
  • Respond calmly, without turning it into playtime

Your puppy isn’t being difficult — they’re adjusting to sleeping without their litter
mates for the first time.

What to Remember

Above all, remember this:

  • Your puppy doesn’t need perfection
  • They need calm, consistency, and reassurance
  • Bonding begins with making them feel safe
  • The first 24 hours lay the emotional foundation for everything that follows — and you’re already doing the most important thing by being there. Good luck Dog Mummas and Dog Dads – enjoy the journey!
