How to Settle Your Puppy in a Small Puppy Carrier

Congratulations! Bringing a puppy home is an exciting time, filled with joy and responsibility. With so many new things to think about, having a puppy carrier is a great tool for helping to introduce your new arrival to the big wide world, giving them the safety and reassurance they need.

A small puppy carrier can be the perfect solution for transporting your pet safely and comfortably before they've had their vaccinations. But how to ensure that every journey is a positive experience for both you and your pet?

Here are our top tips for getting the most out of your small puppy carrier...

Puppy Carrier

1. Select the Right Puppy Carrier - with numerous options available, pay attention to size, material, and design. A small puppy carrier should offer enough space for your puppy to move around but not be so large that they feel insecure. Opt for a material that is both sturdy and breathable to allow proper ventilation. Our 2-in-1 carriers and travel beds offer soft sides and padded interiors and also come with options such as adjustable straps. Many can also be put in the wash for easy cleaning. By carefully choosing a carrier that meets these criteria, you'll create a cosy and secure environment for your puppy during travels.

2. Introduce the Carrier Gradually - begin by placing the carrier in a familiar area of your home where you can both relax and when your pup is ready for a snooze.

Allow your puppy to approach and investigate it at their own pace. You can make the carrier even more enticing by placing some of their favourite toys or a treat inside. Encourage exploration by offering gentle praise whenever your puppy shows interest. Let them become comfortable with the carrier naturally when it's on the floor. This gradual exposure helps build a sense of security and comfort in the carrier so they'll always feel happy in their safe place when out and about with you.

3. Add some Home Comforts - our carriers are designed to offer a cosy, comfortable spot, but if you wanted to add something more to help them feel at home, line the bottom of the carrier with a soft, cosy personalised blanket. Placing an item of clothing you've worn inside can offer familiar scents, which are often comforting to puppies. This will help create a snug and inviting environment where your puppy feels at home.

4. Take Short Trips - once your puppy is comfortable spending time in the carrier at home, you can start taking short trips out to help them get used to travelling and enjoy seeing the world with you!

Begin with brief outings around your neighbourhood. These initial excursions should be short, allowing your puppy to acclimatise gradually to the movement and sounds of travel. Make sure they are securely fastened.

Consistent, short journeys will build your puppy's confidence, making longer trips less daunting in the future. It's also a good idea to vary the destinations of your outings, so your puppy doesn't associate the carrier solely with visits to the vet or other potentially stressful experiences. Bringing along some of their favourite toys or a chew can provide a comforting distraction.

By gradually increasing the complexity of these short trips, you'll help your puppy become a confident and content traveller in their small puppy carrier. You can check out the styles we offer here!
